Background

Pharma R&D laboratory provides training, R&D and consultancy services in the pharmaceutical sector within East Africa Commu- nity. It has participated in several rounds of the proficiency testing (PT) schemes in the field including WHO External Quality As- surance testing schemes organised schemes. In an effort to build regional capacity for providing PT services in pharmaceutical the EAC Secretariat in cooperation with PTB, the German Metrology Institute, have identified Pharm R&D laboratory, School of Phar- macy, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) to become a regional PT provider for the pharmaceutical Testing laboratories. So far three regional Proficiency Tests (PTs) for the pharmaceutical sector in 2013, 2014 and 2015 have been organised within the framework of the EAC-PTB project “Establishment of a Quality Infrastructure for the pharmaceutical sector”. About 20 laboratories have participated in the Proficiency Test on Amoxicillin tables in 2013, on Ofloxacin eye drops in 2014 and on Paracetamol tablets in 2015.

 

The aim of the scheme

The objective is to provide a quality assurance tool to laboratories and to compare performance and take remedial action where necessary to facilitate quality improvement. Proficiency Testing is an inter laboratory comparison of samples against pre-established criteria.

Time lines

Deadline for registration: End of June 2016

Dispatch of the PT items: Mid of July 2016

Deadline for submission of results: Mid of August 2016

Provision of evaluated preliminary results/report: End of September 2016

Participation fee is 50 US$

 

 

Final Evaluation and training workshop

To discuss the results of the PT and the way forward, MUHAS and PTB will organise a 2 day training and evaluation workshop in Dar Es Salaam TZ mid of November. One participant from each participating laboratory will be invited to take part in this work- shop. Participant fee will be 75 USD, travel and accommodation costs will be covered by PTB.
