On 13th June 2009 the Honorable Prof. J. Magembe, Former Minister for Education and Vocational Training, officially inaugurated a new pharmaceutical Teaching, Research and Development Lab at the School of Pharmacy, MUHAS. The Lab, called Pharm R&D Lab, has been built within the frame of a Public Private Partnership between the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), action medeor International Healthcare Ltd. and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences.
The overall objectives of the lab project are to improve pharmaceutical education through revised undergraduate and post-graduate courses, to offer R&D services and practical training courses to local pharmaceutical industries and thus enhance the output of good-quality drugs in East Africa, giving priority to antiretroviral drugs and drugs against opportunistic infections. The lab has been furnished with a state-of the art clean room system, and modern R&D equipment, providing an enabling environment for scientific research and high-quality education.
The vision is to become a Regional Centre of Excellence for practical training of pharmaceutical processionals and offering Formulation Development, Manufacturing Procedures, Scale-up Processes, Stability Testing, Analytical Testing, Qualification ,Validation Services and Quality Assurance activities.
Pharmaceutical companies are welcome to approach the lab for consultancy services regarding drug formulations, Good Manufacturing Practice Issues and practical training courses.
