About Us

The School of Pharmacy MUHAS in collaboration with the Germany Action Medeor Health International are jointly implementing a Pharmaceutical Teaching Research and Development Laboratory at MUHAS co-financed by GTZ (55%), action medeor (30%) and MUHAS (15%) under the Private Public Partnership (PPP) framework. The lab was officially inaugurated by Honorable Prof. J. Magembe, Former Minister for Education and Vocational Training.

The Overall objectives of the initiatives are:

  • To improve practical training of undergraduate pharmacy students in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and offering a venue for post graduate  research training
  • To improve output of good-quality drugs in East African local pharmaceutical industries, giving priority to antiretroviral drugs and drugs against opportunistic infections through quality assurance practical training and R&D services.

Specific objectives:

  • To create sufficient numbers of well-trained pharmacists and technicians,
  • To build R&D capacity for local and regional drug manufacturers, transfer modern efficient GMP compliant production technology,
  • To offer technical assistance to the Tanzanian Drug Regulatory Authority (TFDA) for auditing and regulatory affairs in collaboration with Senior consultants
  • To create a centre of excellence for ongoing R&D capacity, Continuing Professional Development and operational management supports
  • To facilitate the modern efficient GMP compliant development & production of pediatric ARV formulations.

GTZ funds covered the purchase of equipment required and refurbishment of the laboratory. Action medeor provides technical assistance through short term consultancy and travel while MUHAS provided the office space, staff, quality control services and utility costs.
